Truck Owner Denies Making Statement On Truck Speed

F A McNeal owner of the log truck denied telling The Eagle the speed of his vehicle in the Columbia collision and asked the paper to publish his letter correcting the record. He said he did not have a statement on speed and did not know it from personal knowledge.

Relief drive in Dothan seeks funds for unemployed

About 200 residents have registered for work with a local relief movement in Dothan. Dr. Lewis Dockery says groceries debt exceeds seventy dollars as funds remain scarce. 70 of the jobseekers have found temporary work through shoveling, gardening, and ivy planting for public buildings.

O Wilkinson, a Dothan post office clerk, notes springlike growth two months early with oak twigs four to eight inches long and leaves six inches long, while grass and pasture crops are also advanced. He found the growth along a rural mail route near Dothan this February.

Arson conviction reward proposed by Dothan Insurance Exchange

The Dothan Insurance Exchange voted to pay a fifty dollar reward for each arson conviction as part of a campaign to curb incendiary fires. Twelve members attended the meeting and hope tips will lead to arrests and heightened vigilance by the public and fire officials. Fire Chief Zeigiar reports a persistent pattern of incendiary fires in December and prior months, with no arrests.

Two Pupils Hurt In School Bus Crash Near Columbia

Bonnie Mae Wright and W H Crawford two of 30 Columbia students injured in a school bus truck collision near Columbia remained in serious condition at Dothan hospitals. Wright 16 was resting fairly well and Crawford 13 suffered a fractured skull. ten pupils remained hospitalized with Marvis North expected to leave tomorrow.

The Associated Press reports a second seasonal snowfall in Los Angeles slowing rail and highway travel while surrounding West stations wrestle with drifts. Lowland temperatures dipped to 42 degrees as heavy rains drenched southern California. Idaho and Nevada forecast freezing weather and snow. Denver and Rio Grande Western trains stalled in Cumbres Pass for three days with passengers supplied. Rotary plows to clear the route. Rain and warmer trends predicted for the South.

Steamship Arlyn Takes On Kraft Paper Cargo in Panama City

The steamship Arlyn of the Bull Line arrived in Port Panama from Tampa and docked for 900 tons of Kraft paper made at the Panama City mill. The vessel is bound for Newark, New Jersey.

Refinancing plan approved by city council

The refinancing plan was reported as successful by city attorney Lewis after talks with Brandon & Co. Holders of 516000 of water bonds agreed to accept refunding bonds. The council also ordered immediate mosquito control, estimated at 2000, and approved 14373.63 in obligations including bond interest and power purchases.

Counterfeit Tag Operator Nabbed Near Ashford

A man, name withheld, was jailed on a bond under $100 after being caught operating a car with a counterfeit license tag near Ashford. Inspectors noted the plate had been altered from a 1930 tag to resemble a 1932 Alabama plate, with Alabama printed at the bottom in 1930 and 1932. It marks the first such arrest in the county.

Unique Junior Revue Tonight at City Auditorium

A junior beauty revue for children aged five to 12 will be staged tonight at 8 at the city auditorium. H W Lidden of the American Legion Auxiliary directs the show with Dothan's talents on display. Ruth and Martha Sue Lidden from Marianna appear in period scenes and will perform as well as sing George M Cohan’s Washington celebration song. Rehearsals were held at 4 this afternoon for participating children.

Automobile Crash Kills Two On Selma Montgomery Highway

Ray mond Newcomb of White Plains New York and E N Cunningham of Birmingham Alabama died after their car skidded from the Selma Montgomery road and crashed through a bridge railing into a creek. Cunningham age 54 was married and driving the car. Newcomb was unmarried.

Former Dothanite Dies at Mountain Creek

News comes from Dothan of the death this morning of Mrs. J. T. Fowler at her Mountain Creek home Alabama after months of declining health. Survived by husband and two children Tom Fowler and Miss Trudie Fowler of Birmingham. Burial in Birmingham tomorrow. Dr and Mrs Fowler lived in Dothan for years and were well known locally. Tom and Trudie attended Dothan schools.

Dick Palmore aged 48 or so was jailed last week on a charge of operating a still in a rural area. He claimed he distills whiskey to obtain food for his family after months of unemployment. His son in law Camie Halstead was arrested with him during the operation.

Ermon Redick a 30 year old Black man of Blakely Georgia remained unconscious five days after a tree fell on him while he was cutting timber in a rural area near Blakely. After surgery and hospital care attendants said he would probably recover despite a fractured skull.

Paris February 16. The French premier and his cabinet resigned to President Doumer after a 157 to 134 senate vote rejected delaying debate on government policy amid Geneva disarmament talks. The premier then called on advisers and submitted his resignation.

Japanese air scouts hit Chinese troops near Shanghai

Japanese air scouts observed a large body of Chinese cavalry and infantry moving toward the front near Kiangnan between Shanghai and Woosung. Japanese artillery then fired on the Chinese columns, inflicting heavy casualties, while elsewhere the day remained quiet and preparations for a possible offensive continued. In Geneva the League drafting committee was ordered to frame an urgent appeal for Japan to cease hostilities and to seek an understanding with China, basing the appeal on the covenant guaranteeing territorial integrity.
