Citizen extension debate shapes city limits growth
A Chamber of Commerce survey is proposed to measure how many nonresidents could join the city if limits extend. Secretary Arthur Johnson estimates 1,000 to 1,500 potential new residents, with 60 western families already affected. Areas tagged include Headland Road, Cottonwood Road, and the Florida highway. many now use city utilities and schools with tuition fees for nonresident children. The western extension promises new homes by 1950, risking loss of those families from the 1956 census if not included. Benefits cited are free schools, voting, lower fire insurance, and access to water, electricity, and sewage. the sole downside is the five mill ad valorem tax, offset by tuition and insurance savings.
