House Group Seeks More Information On Army Nurse Needs
Washington AP The House Military Committee asked for more data on whether a draft of women is needed to supply nurses for the armed forces. Indications suggest plans to push a nurse draft bill by next week may be dropped as discussions focus on expanding the Bolton Act Cadet Nurse Corps. Representative Sparkman noted Thomas Parran of the Public Health Service testified there are about 105000 cadets in the corps with 40500 graduates applying for military service. Parran argued a selective draft for graduate nurses up to 45 would meet needs, while without it many private duty nurses about 69500 might not contribute enough to military or civilian demands. The committee will study amending the Bolton Act to require cadet nurses to agree to military availability, with dissenters able to drop out.
