Gin Fire Destroys Granberry Mill Near Headland

A gin owned by M. J. Granberry near Headland was destroyed by fire yesterday. Loss estimated at 8000 dollars with part insured. Fire reportedly started when sparks from the boiler room ignited the gin while employees were at lunch. Granberry mill had operated for many years.

Man Bedridden Elder Dies at Home

Ww M Heath 70 bedridden over 12 years died at his Dothan route two home. Survived by widow and several nieces and relatives in Texas. A longtime Foster Street Methodist member of 40 years. Johnny Napier, a farmer near Ardilla, reported a nighttime theft of 400 pounds of meat. Officers said the robbers dug under the smokehouse to reach the loot, labeling the thieves as low down rogues.

Recruiting Officer Returns from Birmingham Exams

The navy recruiting officer George C. Lott returned yesterday from Birmingham with special instructions on physical examinations. Two recruits from the territory accompanied him to Birmingham and were sent to Norfolk, Virginia for training. The new recruits are Roy Herbert Jolier of Slocomb and George Hugh Draughon of Newton.

Court Orders Negro To Await Grand Jury

The case of John Lamb, Negro, charged with assault and battery, was waived to the grand jury in common pleas court yesterday. Lamb is alleged to have attacked Jim Gilford, another Negro. Two men were fined $12 for public drunkenness and several hoboes were discharged. Five judgments were given in small civil suits after trials and several judgments were rendered in cases because of default.

Jobs for idle in city to be sought tonite

A mass meeting at the city auditorium will seek jobs for about 100 unemployed in Dothan. The relief bureau reports 100 registered with three jobs offered, and citizens urged to attend bringing a dime to cover small debts for relief supplies. Montgomery Kiwanis hears on child clinics and unemployment

E H Gentry of Montgomery spoke to the Kiwanis on Alabama crippled children clinics. He cited 233 children aided last year with eight from Houston county and noted six Houston county children were hospitalized this year. Fire Destroys House at 15 South Appletree Street

Firemen report an incendiary blaze badly damaging a residence at 15 South Appletree Street around 3 am. Two front rooms were destroyed and other areas badly harmed. small spots of fire were found in other rooms. The insured home, owned by Morgan Rogers, had coverage of 2,000 dollars.

Two Men Seek Jobs to Support Struggling Family

Two young men, a painter and a cafe helper, applied at a free employment agency in Dothan today, seeking work to support an invalid father, a mother, and five children. A Negro widow with three children, one an invalid daughter, also sought work, noting only one day of work in a year. The agency reported more than 100 local families need jobs, and responses from Dothan residents could place them.

Grace Ford 21 of Hartford is hospitalized in Dothan with a head injury after the car she rode in overturned when a tire blew out near Columbia. Heavy Snow Covers West and Below Zero Weather Reported

Two U.S. Representatives Die Within Hour of Each Other

Representatives Percy E. Quin of Mississippi and Samuel Rutherford of Georgia died within an hour of each other in Washington. Quin had served nearly 20 years and chaired the military committee. Rutherford, in the House six years, was shaving at his hotel when he died. The deaths left the House Democrats with 218 seats to 213 Republicans with one Farmer-Labor seat and three vacancies.

The Democratic primary on March 7 drew twelve candidates for Dothan city council across four wards. Incumbents J J Newton and S W Burkett defend Ward Four while Ward One features four contenders including T H McEntyre Albert Logue B C Hughes and A J Grant.
