Social Security Benefits Rise for Wiregrass Area Earning Widows
The Mount By Himself earners and young widows with minor children. There has been a considerable increase in the number of checks disbursed in this area in the last three years, records show. As of January 1, 1843, 5 monthly checks were being mailed totaling $8,760. By June this year 1214 persons were receiving checks totaling $15,600. In six months since June, payments rose by $4,528.93. Scott attributes the growth to better awareness of rights under the Local Security program and cooperation from radio and newspapers. Retirement and survivors benefits are outlined for wage earners, spouses, and children, with checks ceasing when the youngest child turns eighteen unless the widow remarries and qualifies for an old-age pension later. The program aims to aid aged workers, widows, and children, with emphasis on reporting retirements promptly to avoid losses. Self-employment and many non-covered occupations are not included.
