Leaders Push for Action on Housing Program
Democratic leaders plan spring action on a housing program linked to President Truman's State of the Union. The plan targets private construction of homes priced 7 000 to 3 000 dollars for moderate income families, with loan insurance and down payment terms broadened to spur building alongside public housing. The Sparkman bill and administration measure aim to supplement the public housing and clearance program, targeting in between families earning too much for public housing.

Pension and insurance bills for veterans on Congress agenda

The World War II home bill lingers in background and veterans groups push a Rankin-led plan with expanded life insurance and disability provisions, though prospects remain uncertain. A separate VEW bonus proposal and a G-1 schooling provision add to the veteran benefits discussion as lawmakers consider the cost and reach of these measures.

Arms Shipment Delays Trim Start For Western Europe
Washington officials say United States military aid shipments to Western Europe will begin about a month late. The delay reduces the five month window to spend or earmark the $1.009 billion Congress set aside for rearming Atlantic Pact nations. Officials express confidence that funds can still be obligated by June 30 once agreements are signed with each country. Negotiations with Britain influenced the delay as Britain objected to wording in the draft accords.
