In San Bernardino County California sheriff said the Navajo Los Angeles Chicago flyer derailed at Hesperia due to train wrecking. Saboteurs removed spikes and an angle iron, causing the locomotive and seven cars to leave the tracks. Three sleepers plunged down a 15 foot embankment with one person injured.

Gov Washington dispatch reports 710 influenza deaths in the week ending Dec 22 across 58 cities, up from 475 in the prior week in 62 cities. Atlanta records 33 deaths. Georgia shows 6852 cases, with Alabama 1518 and Tennessee 401.

The U S Agriculture Department reports 23 892 bales of cotton ginned in Houston County from the 1928 crop before December 33, compared with 21 082 bales before December 19, 1927, an increase of 2 810 bales this season.
Herbert Walker 18, son of George Walker, was seriously injured when the steering gear failed on the Montgomery highway. The car rolled over three times, throwing him to the pavement and causing a severe skull wound with body bruises. He was taken home in semi conscious condition.
Shenandoah high school will install a main switch board with three wires to each classroom auditorium and gymnasium. Teachers will receive educational programs and can tune in via a button. A microphone will be placed in the superintendent and principal offices. The project is funded by the Shenandoah Rotary Club.
Mrs Mary Elizabeth Bryan died Wednesday at the home of her daughter Mrs M R Smith in Port St Joe Florida. She was 82 years old and survived by two daughters Mrs M B Smith of Port St Joe and Mrs K A Mach of Montgomery and son T L Bryan of Jacksonville. Funeral will be at the Methodist church in Columbia Friday at ten. Interment in Columbia cemetery.

Judge Augustus J. McCloskey of Bexar county faces trial for allegedly altering election returns to claim victory in a congressional race. The contested fourteenth district result favored Rep. Harry M. Wurzbach by 247 votes after unofficial tallies. McCloskey, a Democrat, disputed the count claiming a 19 vote win. The county canvass later solidified the figures McCloskey tabulated.
The Alaga Bridge over the Chattahoochee River faces delays but is expected to be finished within the next sixty days barring unforeseen events. Superintendent Perigon notes slow progress after early year construction began and contractor abandonment.
