Farmers With Gross Income 500 Or More Must File Tax Returns
Thousands of Alabama farmers must prepare federal income tax reports. The government requires all farmers with a gross income of 500 dollars or more to file. AP extension statistician Foy Helms notes options: declare estimated net income by January 15 with a final return by March 15, or file a final return by January 15. He says 1946 taxes will be higher with rate reductions and surtaxes, averaging about 17 percent less than 1945. A change in law allows some reductions as a business expense.

6000 Farms Use DDT Demonstration In Alabama
A cattle spraying demonstration in 61 Alabama counties protected 163000 animals from horn flies lice and other pests. Extension specialist W O Gregory estimates sprayed cattle were about 15 percent more efficient in weight gain. On 6000 farms two pounds of 59 percent wettable DDT powder were mixed with five gallons water yielding about one gallon per eight cattle at two and a half cents per head. Usually three sprayings in summer kept pests away.

Greater Lime Use Is Urged By PMA
Alabama farmers spread 65 000 tons of liming materials this year, about 10 percent more than 1945 and four times the amount a decade ago. PMA officials said roughly trucks with a fleet of about spread lime on crop and pasture land across eight counties. They forecast more truckers next year and note no shortage of liming materials. Under the 1947 program ground limestone will be paid at 2.40 to 3.50 dollars per ton depending on transport and delivery costs. Farmers are urged to raise usage next year, with a goal of tenfold the 1946 amount annually.
