Rights Guarded Gasoline Tax Suits In Alabama Court
In Montgomery on December 21 officials filed suits against all gasoline distributors to recover 264 000 dollars in excise taxes claimed on gasoline withdrawn from storage for sale to federal agencies. Attorneys said the actions preserve the state's claim while awaiting appeal of a similar case at the U S Supreme Court. The state contends the tax applies to withdrawals from storage not to taxes on government sales. Oil firms argue there is no right to tax gasoline sold to the government.
