Soviet and Western officials prepared for formal talks in Moscow with Molotov Bevin and Byrnes among key participants. The agenda includes atomic energy talks and the question of Azerbaijan autonomy within Iran. Byrnes stayed late at Spasso House for informal discussions with Harriman and aides.
Elizabeth Dunigan pleaded guilty to assault to murder in the death of a newborn girl found in an ash pit at her rooming house on St Andrews Street. She received a four year penitentiary term and later sought probation with a Dec 2 hearing set. The baby, suffering burns, was taken to Camp Rucker hospital. Dunigan claimed she did not know she was pregnant. A second case involved Alton and Fay McGowen, who pled guilty to assault and battery and were fined $25 each.
President Truman was presented with a booklet by a TVA delegation praising support for the Tennessee Valley Authority. The pamphlet highlighted Kentucky dam remarks on October 1 and endorsed autonomous regional cooperation over centralized bureaucracy.
President Truman outlined Gen George C Marshall's China mandate to end Nationalist Communist hostilities and push a broad national government. Officials of Houston County report Clyde Lovern replacing Robert Ramsey as chair for the Victory Loan Drive. Ramsey resigned to attend his ill son in Rochester Mayo Hospital. In Chelsea Massachusetts 23 year old Rose Carlan, mother of kidnapped infant Ronald Carlan, is held on murder charges after the six month old baby’s body is found under a China closet. A medical examiner seeks to determine the cause of death as the district court fills with spectators for the arraignment. The defendant denies the charge and collapses after the reading.
Tester A Farmer will head the Houston County Bar Association in 1848 succeeding H F McClintock. Officers named at the meeting include Cyrus Lewis as vice president James Tindell as secretary and W C Farmer as treasurer. Executive committee members are Robert Ramecy Kenner Baxley and Tom E Buntin. Installation occurs at the annual banquet on January 11.
The UAW CIO urged Britain to intervene as a GM stockholder in the wage dispute. President Thomas said a letter to Prime Minister Attlee asked Britain to inform GM that profits matter to workers and owners. He cited Britains October 1945 ownership of 44,000 GM common shares.
Washington AP Charles Campbell head of the British Information Service said Britain owns a block of General Motors stock with voting rights. He stated the government acquired the stock during wartime expropriations and that profits were bargained with the union. He criticized GM management as not reflecting owners' views.

Washington AP The Gridiron Club hosted a long awaited wartime revival dinner at the Stadler Hotel with about 500 guests including President Truman Governor Dewey and General MacArthur. The satire poked at Byrnes Hurley Stassen Bricker Brownell Murray Schwellenbach and other prominent figures. Lyle C Wilson was inaugurated as club president.
General MacArthur ordered state Shintoism abolished in Japan to destroy the compulsory religious ideology supporting war. The directive calls for withdrawal of government support of state Shinto, purging militaristic doctrine, and removing Shinto from schools while preserving the sect itself.
Dothan's laundry facilities damaged by a Friday morning fire will be partially restored next week. Arthur Johnson secretary of the Chamber of Commerce said night operations by other laundries will relieve the shortage and the area should return to near normal. O L Baker of Dothan Steam Laundry said a public statement on clothing and other losses will be issued Monday.
Tokyo reports Prince Fumimaro Konoye, a former three term premier, died by his own hand last night. MacArthur headquarters said Konoye, detained as a war criminal suspect since December, had been ordered to Sugamo prison and was 54. He led Japan during pivotal wartime moments and was involved in major political shifts and the Axis alliance.
