Crime rate climbs in and around Washington communities
AP reports J Edgar Hoover cites that crime is higher in smoky nonmetropolitan areas with fewer police per 2,000 inhabitants. Nine month 1935 data show property offenses rising where police coverage is thin. Youth arrests skew younger. 3 year olds appear less. 37.4 percent of arrests were under 25. White tenant growth outpaced colored in many southern counties, notably in Jefferson, with large gains in white tenants and substantial but smaller rises among colored tenants across several counties in the state.
