Coal strike ends as Lewis urges court ruling
A hurried press conference announced by Lew ig cites the miners returning to work until midnight March 31 while the Supreme Court weighs the United Mine Workers appeal. Production was about 17 percent of normal for the week ending Nov 30. Lewis reads a letter framing the fight as a battle over constitutional rights and urges negotiations contingent on court status of government contracts and federal mine control. The miners’ seizure since last May remains a backdrop to talks on a new wage agreement with operators and possible return of mines to private owners depending on court action.
