Kentucky Lady Sheriff Proves Vivid To Mountaineers
In Gearheartville Kentucky Knox county elects Mrs Jelly Mealer Walker as sheriff for four years marking a historic rise of a woman in a top county law role. A former bookkeeper and stenographer aged 40, she vows only sober honest and fearless deputies. Her family has long held sheriff positions and a strong local following backs her bid. The victory over an opposing candidate by over 300 votes signals a shift in Appalachian policing norms.
