Montgomery August 31 AP Governor Bibb Graves declared Alabama has the most efficient national guard. Returning from Fort McClellan he reviewed state troops on Governor's Day. Turner Feels Lucky To Escape Crash With Life

Gallup New Mexico August a1 AP Col Ros ton Turner escaped serious harm after a crash south of Gallup during the Bendix air race trials. Flying at 10000 feet in clear weather, engine failure forced a forced landing on Indian farmland, the plane flipping twice. Turner, unhurt, headed to Los Angeles by train, marking his first crash in 18 years of flying. A prior fueling mishap near Albuquerque last year cost him a chance at the trophy. An Indian Service man aided Turner after a 18 mile horseback ride to Gallup from Zuni.

Record Queen Mary sets faster eastward crossing

London Aug 31 AP A new record for the fastest eastward crossing of the North Atlantic was logged by the Queen Mary. The Cunard liner steamed from Ambrose Light New York to Bishop Rock off the English coast in three days 23 hours and 6 minutes, beating the Normandie by over three days and four hours, and surpassing last week’s record for fastest eastward voyage.

Whiting Former Secretary of Commerce Dies in Holyoke

Willem Fairfield Whiting 72 former secretary of commerce died at his home in Holyoke Massachusetts. He served in Coolidge’s cabinet from August 21 1928 to March 4 1929. A graduate of Amherst College class of 1884 he remained active in politics as a Republican delegate in multiple national conventions.
