State Frees Man in Work Fight Case
In Rockville Maryland AP Stan Day a 19 year old farm hand and Army rejectee was freed Saturday after serving two days of a delay sentence for violating Maryland’s work or fight law. The case centered on an alleged failure to work for $2 a day. The State’s Attorney said there was no prevailing wage offer and entered a not guilty plea on behalf of the state. The civil liberties division of the U S Department of Justice said it had at least a nominal interest in the case under possible involuntary servitude angles. Day claimed he received full pay and that the farmer withheld part of wages. The work or fight law was enacted to curb alleged coercion by farmers against transient labor.
