President Truman ordered the return of seized plants from 24 companies, to be returned to owners “as soon as practicable.” Each plant’s date of return will be set by the federal agent in charge, with government control ending unless the plant disrupts military activity or reconversion.
Washington AP. The government aims to return private plants to peacetime production with emphasis on government plants kept idle. Fed factories will be cleared of munition leftovers and refitted for civilian goods. Officials see private plants as key to rapid reconversion and creating jobs for veterans and laid-off workers. Lt Gen Levin H Campbell Jr named to lead reconversion office.
City Commissioner President J D Ayres proclaims August 27 through September 1 as Back to Peace Production week in Dothan urging citizens to fill war to peace labor needs. He calls unemployed men to seek work and asks residents to refer prospective workers to the U S Employment Service for immediate placement.
Cigarette shelves fill as Dothan stores recover from a recent shortage. While popular brands remain limited, stores increasingly stock cigarettes though with a narrower variety. Stoop brands, a wartime under the counter term, still appear but are less dominant as merchants offer more quantity. Pipe tobacco also shows signs of improvement as shoppers move between shops for preferred brands.
Camp Rucker will host a surge of Army activity with an estimated 30 000 to 35 000 personnel as the 91st Division and multiple service troops are assigned. Col Martin C Schallenberger announced arrival dates for infantry and non divisional units beginning Oct 7, with the 9th Division from Europe expected to reinforce the post as plans for new training programs move from Camp Rucker to other camps. The 63rd, 73rd Wildcats, the 35th and 93rd divisions plus service troops are among those slated to train there. Congressman George Andrews had predicted additional Army personnel would be sent to the camp.
Houston County farmers were urged by county agent C M Ling to file prisoner of war help applications by next Wednesday as 550 workers will be allotted for Sept 1 to Sept 15. The Farm Labor Advisory Committee meets Thursday to divide prisoners, with allocations based on Wednesday totals.
Members of the Dothan Retail Merchant Association voted to keep Thursday afternoon closings through May 1 with Thanksgiving Christmas exemptions and 9 am to 9 pm weekday hours. Saturday hours remain 9 am to 9 pm. Ed Crawford chaired the Friday meeting.

Three American Doolittle raid veterans liberated from three years in Japanese captivity arrived in Chungking. The men, TA Needson of Utah, Hite of Texas, Deshazer of Oregon, and Barr of New York, were met by cheers and carried to safety. One survivor said he faced execution before liberation.
Washington AP reports the Office of Defense Transportation will lift wartime controls on local bus and street car service on August 31. The change follows victory over Japan and depends on whether operators add buses and trolleys quickly. Travel may improve in towns and cities as equipment is released from wartime use.
Washington AP The French government plans to use about one million German prisoners of war for two years to help reconstruct devastated areas. The move follows talks with President Truman during Gen. Charles De Gaulle’s Washington visit, signaling postwar friendship and cooperation. A joint statement by De Gaulle and Truman spoke of fundamental harmony and closer cooperation between France and the United States. De Gaulle reportedly raised several major topics in White House discussions.
The National Peanut Council schedules two meetings, one in Albany, Georgia, and one in Dothan, Alabama, Tuesday and Wednesday, to plan grower participation in the council program. Emmett Sizemore and W. Crawley will speak in Dothan and Albany respectively, with Parrish and Stevens also addressing sessions. Leaders from the Georgia Peanut Company and Dewson Cotton Oil Company are set to speak at both gatherings.

San Francisco AP reports from Tokyo on Saturday that radio described growing action and gloom at the Imperial Palace as concern over Hari-Kiri increases. Jeanna Inouye warns such incidents may recur, while Tokyo prepares for occupation forces. officials aim to end the crisis soon.
Vidkun Quisling told a Norway treason trial that he talked the Germans out of fighting on in Norway after Germany collapsed. He said the German commander planned to fight on, while he warned it would be wrong to make Norway a German battlefield. Wilhelm Ullmann recalled the Quisling of old as loyal, but said today’s Quisling is different.
