Locust Plague Hits Southern Philippine Crops

Reports say forests consuming crops are a major pest in the southern Philippines. Inter-island steamers have brought thousands of sacks of cooked locusts ready for sale to Filipino laborer families. In some regions the locusts destroyed more than the harvest they consumed.

Plane used as death by own action shocks Washington

An attractive young woman, Miss Marjorie Fletcher, leaped from an aircraft between Washington and Annapolis, Md. She vanished into a wooded area near Edgewater Beach as searchers comb the locale. Fletcher, once of Fortesville, N. Y., had chartered the plane with Pilot Roger Scott paying 25 dollars for a round trip, and despondency over job prospects was cited. A pocketbook with 34 dollars and the McConaughys’ address were found aboard.

Striking Miners Invasion Threatens Illinois Coal Field

A four mile long motor caravan of striking miners departed Staunton Illinois to pressure southern Illinois coal fields against the new five dollar wage scale. Children of School Age in Dothan Census Count Reach 4024

Dothan's 1932 biennial school census tallies 4024 children, up from 3963 in 1930. White pupils number 2400 and 1624 are Negro. Census cost $184.96. white entries at five cents each and Negro at four. Grace Bonham and Ralph Moseley supervised white counts. G W McRae led Negro census. During the past year 372 pupils had perfect attendance, 344 of them white.

The Methodist Board of Prohibition and Public Morals in Washington denounced Hoover’s plan to alter prohibition laws as bitterly disappointing and praised Vice President Curtis as the only candidate worthy of commendation. Naval cadets laid to common grave after Niobe sinking

Twenty two naval cadets who died in the Niobe disaster were buried in a common grave after a grand outdoor funeral in Kiel. A warship fired a salute as survivor stood by the altar. Attending were Prince August Wilhelm, son of the former kaiser, and Prince Waldemar, the kaiser's nephew.

The state house passed an income tax amendment aimed at allowing a $1500 exemption for unmarried individuals and $3000 for the head of a family.
