The Dale County school census shows 8 284 children ages 6 to 21, up 125 from 1930. Of the total, 6 282 are white. 80 percent of the gain is white. Illiteracy fell countywide by 218 versus 1930, with Ozark reporting 1 138 pupils in 1932.

Brothers Arrested In Hotel Slaying Of Real Estate Man

Sam and Raymond Dyson brothers from Fairhope were arrested in Mobile on August 23 and face murder charges for the shooting of Henry Butler 27 a prominent real estate man. Butler's body was found after a call to the hotel clerk spoke of a serious illness and a business dispute was cited as the likely motive.

O. G. Godwin formerly lived here was called to Valdosta by the death of his brother Alec Godwin in Dothan. Death was unexpected. Both brothers were well known in Dothan. Alec visited his brother, an undertaker there for years. Funeral will be held in Valdosta.

Bound for the Promise Land stage show aids Dothan unemployed

The Bound for the Promise Land Negro stage show at the city auditorium raised 8.70 after 20 in expenses. About 125 attendees participated, with 100 adults and 25 children. Net proceeds were split between the Dothan Unemployment Bureau and Cherry Street A M E Church. The two hour program featured strong singing and acting and may be repeated next week for unemployed assistance.

Marianna Motorcade To Inspect Pine Plantations And Fire Units

A motorcade will depart Marianna at 2 pm to tour forest plantations and fire control units in the region. State Forester Harry Lee Baker will lead, inviting Gov. Doyle Carlton and Democratic officials to attend the August 26-27 rally. The trip includes a 40 acre slash pine plantation near Chipley and a fire control unit near Panama City with firebreak demonstrations, ending with a fish fry and swim at Long Beach by the Kiwanis club.

Young Man Falls Overboard in Gulf Near Panama City

Neil Bullock a 24 year old University of Alabama graduate went overboard from a sail powered launch in the Gulf of Mexico near Panama City. Boats and the US dredge Benguard continued the search about two miles offshore as friends aided but the body had not yet been recovered.

Illinois coal mines operating peacefully after officials confer

Franklin county coal mines were operating peacefully today with pickets withdrawn and no violence in more than 24 hours. United Mine Workers representatives, opposing the $5 daily wage schedule, met with miners and county officials at Zeigler, scene of Sunday’s clash that left one dead and six injured. Several hundred special deputies stood by, but no trouble was expected.

Recorder Fines Man for Cutting In On City Water

R. E. Kiley a 28 year old Grandview resident was fined 26 dollars and 2 dollars costs after pleading guilty to cutting in on the city water. He was arrested by city officers Monday, released on bond, then appeared before Recorder J. L. Vaughn. City employees said Kelley installed a pipe in meter connections in front of his home after his water service had been cut off and the meter removed by the city.

Nine year old Wright recovering after bicycle accident

Reduction of Pay for Legislators Moves in State House

In Montgomery on August B the House approved Beebe’s resolution and sent the income tax and bond issue amendments to a special order. The Senate, led by Powell of Tuskegee, postponed the fight until the next legislative day. The Senate unanimously approved a bill cutting legislator pay from eight to six dollars daily and also backed the Walker bill reducing delinquent tax penalties from fifteen to eight percent and easing the requirement to pay taxes a year in advance.

J. L. Vaughn presided his initial session in a veteran style handing down fines to four drunkenness offenders. One repeat offender learned a liquor lecture before payment. A Negro woman’s drunkenness charge was dropped after testimony she was merely cutting up in front of her home. Vaughn noted how holding trials is not easy and that people often seek leniency before trials.

Georgia County Hog Crop to Total 40000 Head

Thomasville reports hog production in 1932 will reach about 40000 head per Pat Ward county farm agent. The 1931 total was around 45000 and 1929 about 50000. Even with lower prices the hog crop yields more revenue than the county’s 1932 cotton crop at 14.0% bales and 6 cents per pound.
