War reshapes pawnbroking as service members go abroad and workers earn high pay elsewhere. pledges fall 25 to 40 percent since Pearl Harbor, though brokers still have funds. Loans rise, but short terms slash interest and redemptions lag, pushing merchandise off the shelves in lean years.
After wartime shortages, pawnshops face slow sales and tight margins. Brokers profit little from original loans, fees, and storage costs, even as stores empty and public buys second-hand cameras, watches, radios, and other goods. Regular customers fade, while newcomers seek bargains on corsets, baby carriages, and victory garden gear.
The torpedo built by Adkins and Dye, a small airplane powered by a four cylinder motorcycle engine, was patented after work began in 1917. They demonstrated wireless control perched on a car, guiding the craft two and a half miles away before it crashed in a well during testing.
In Dothan inventors described a 12 by 12 foot aerial torpedo with a wing span and fuselage of about 12 feet, three landing wheels, a warhead nose, a firing pin via the propeller shaft, and a wireless controlled system powered by 56 dry cell batteries. They aimed to sink ships or disrupt formations, but after armistice the project faded until a photo resurfaced years later.
In the first three months of 1944, three thousand tanks and ninety thousand other motor vehicles, including tank destroyers and truck Jeeps, were sent to Allied forces. The measure reflects a major buildup to bolster frontline capabilities across the European theater.
