Roxboro North Carolina AP report says the chairman and board members resigned in protest against further inductions. The board canceled a call for 28 white men scheduled for induction and sent resignations to Gen J Van Metts. They stated local people do not support continuing to call registrants for induction amid congressional action.

Mrs G T Thomley of Newton died at her home after a long illness. She was about 46 years old. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ward Wilson upon the arrival of relatives. Service men in France will begin to receive about 450 francs a month or $17 at the official exchange rate from the French government starting September 1. The franc is revalued downward for servicemen only, with no change in the 50 to 1 dollar rate. Many service members have been cashing around $17 after deductions, and some have used the black market in Tranent.

George G Hodges, 55, died at home in Cottonwood after a weeks long illness. A native of Dale County, he moved to Cottonwood months ago and was a member of Wiggles church. He leaves a widow and daughter Mary Alice Hodges, a son-in-law, Mrs Ada F. Hodges, and three brothers Charles Hodges, Dempsey Hodges, and Jay Hodges. Funeral services will be held at Wiggles church tomorrow at 1:00 PM with Rev A D Zdinden and Rev Bob Conk officiating. Burial will follow in Wiggins Cemetery with Wardville in charge.

Staff Sergeant Jesse N. Baxter of Ashford is awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Germany from March 15 to May 8, 1945. The June 26 citation notes his complete disregard for personal safety as he directed fire and movement under enemy observation and fire. Baxter’s parents are deceased. he is a cousin of Odell Knight of Ashford.
AP reports Senator Lister Hill declares southern difficulties hinge on federal support.
