President Roosevelt invites governors for drought conference

President Roosevelt dispatched invitations to Gov Langdon and other leaders for drought conference meetings at Des Moines and alternate sites. Attending officials include governors of Nebraska Missouri Oklahoma and South Dakota plus state officers. The Des Moines gathering precedes a hedge dedication in Hannibal Missouri and sessions with Indiana Ohio and Michigan leaders. Governor Landon reaffirmed he will attend the Des Moines conference in September.

Suit settled in Angelus Temple row undisclosed terms

Rattler’s Bite Fatal for Dale County Resident

Dale County resident Sam Brennan of Newton Rolis One was fatally bitten by a four foot rattler in a cotton field late Thursday afternoon. He died in Dothan hospital Friday morning after an antivenom injection proved too late as venom spread through his body. The snake struck between his thumb and index finger as he bent to pick a low boll. Others nearby applied a crude tourniquet and he was transported to Newton, with a Holman ambulance later taking him to Dothan. The reptile was killed and displayed in Newton. Brennan, who worked on the Ozark WPA armory project, had 130 hours two months and was picking cotton for extra money. Survived by wife and six children. Funeral at Goodwater church near Vicksburg Friday afternoon.

Mrs Baxley Dies After Long Illness At Home

Mrs Leecy Baxley 65 pioneer resident of southeast Alabama died Thursday at 400 N Appletree street after a prolonged illness. wife of Jeptha Baxley she helped found Foster Street Methodist church and was active in early Dothan. Survived by husband two daughters Mrs W A Cotter Ozark and Mrs Joy Dinkins Dothan son Jones Baxley Gulfport four brothers J Hilson Edmon Hilson W H Hilson two sisters Mrs B C Hay Florence and Mrs A V Cannon Jakin. Funeral at 1 pm Pridey home with Rev W B Curtis assisted by Rev C T Talley and Rev J M Blankenship. Burial in city cemetery. Pallbearers named with honorary pallbearers listed.

Governor Declines Hand In Seattle Newspaper Strike

Governor Clarence D. Martin took no action to end the nine day strike at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, saying he would not intervene in what he called an inflammatory editorial dispute. The strike, called by the Seattle chapter of the American Newspaper Guild on August 13, followed the discharge of two Guild members amid disputes with Hearst executives.

Sales tax foe to see report on school aid
