In 30S Ohio on August 20 AP reports a crowd of about 50 000 gathered as Governor Roosevelt opened his presidential campaign. The event featured denouncing Hoover and supporting Democratic themes with Senator Bulkley and George White addressing the audience. Roosevelt planned a noon address focusing on national issues and party unity.

Miners Rally Over Five Dollar Wage Protest In Illinois

In SBurg Illinois on August 20 miners urged coal workers across Christian county to quit in protest against the five dollar wage. About 500 men descended on Schuler and fed lunch to 50 miners while persuading others to return home. State police intervened without violence. Further work stoppages occurred in the Taylorsville area as expeditionary forces sought to halt minimum wage protests.

Grand Jury Here Convenes Tuesday in Ingram Case

The Houston county grand jury, moved from Monday to Tuesday, will consider the case of J. H. Ingram, traveling salesman charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Dothan youth George Cochran. About 400 county residents faced a Monday deadline to settle overdue property taxes to avoid sale. A list of 45 delinquent taxpayers had been compiled a week earlier but the list had been reduced since.

Grand jurors may probe seed loans in more counties

Alleged frauds in government seed loans in Dale Henry Coffe and Geneva counties are expected to be considered when the U S grand jury convenes in Montgomery August 29. The charges, same as those that led to about 120 Houston county indictments, were linked to an expanding probe. No arrests yet in neighboring counties. The Houston county investigation began last fall with DOJ agents, followed by the arrest of J Henry Witherington county farm agent J Norton Mullings circuit solicitor and others.
