British aviator Lancaster acquitted in sensational trial

Miami August 18 Capt gw N Lancaster British aviator was acquitted of the murder of Haden Clarke by a 12 member jury after a four hour, 58 minute deliberation. Pandemonium followed as bailiffs struggled to control an ecstatic crowd. Lancaster thanked the jurors and said he would rest then seek employment. Mrs J M Keith Miller, central to the love triangle, reacted with delight.

Paving Bids Sought Next Month for 22 Mile Highway

Houston county Alabama awaits bids for paving a 22 mile stretch from Dothan to the Georgia line. The $375000 project will employ Houston county residents only and work will begin in winter under Reconstruction Finance Corporation guidance. Completion is expected in six to eight months.

House Committee Votes Favorably on Revenue Plans

The House Ways and Means Committee in Montgomery Alabama voted 17 to 9 to report favorably on an administration income tax amendment. It also approved an $20 million bond issue to pay debts and the enabling act creating a bond commission. The Poole resolution to halt revenue measures until retrenchment is complete was approved.

Athens Ga Aug 18 AP The final message from Private Devereaux P Simpson who died in France in 1917 reaches a Gold Star mother who once lived in Athens. Memphis Sideslip Nears Sinking On Ohio River Voyage

The excursion steamer Memphis carrying 781 aboard struck a rock on the Ohio River near Louisville and almost sank. A 748 passenger crowd from New Albany Indiana and 33 crew were landed safely as the hull tore open. Officers kept calm by ordering the orchestra to play and the caliope to strike up. Three girls were injured on the gangplank after mooring. An investigation by a United States inspector is underway.

Dead Negro Baby Found In Woods Near County Poor Farm

The body of a Negro baby between 24 and 48 hours old was found by Haywood Danny while gathering wood in woods near the county poor farm at 7:30 this morning. No signs of violence were reported. The infant's body was wrapped in a towel and placed in a homemade box 18 by 12 inches, nailed shut. The box was found in wooded lowlands and the body was buried later today.

Elijah King Dies at Daughter's Home in Columbus

Elijah King 78 of Columbus Georgia died late Wednesday at daughter Mrs J M Braddock Gordon Route One after a lingering illness. Survived by three sons J B King Columbus B W King Albany and J W King Chattahoochee. Funeral held 11 am today at White Bridge Church eight miles northeast of Donalsonville with church pastor officiating. Fellows and Forrester in charge of arrangements.

Brother of Woman in Dothan Buried

Funeral for Lee Carroll age 60 of Clayton route one was held at Cree cemetery near his home. He died after a long illness of heart disease. Survivors include his sister Mrs W K Barber of Dothan and three other sisters and three brothers all from Clayton route one and Daleville and Clanton areas.

Woman Hurt When Truck Hits Auto in City Crash

Mrs. W. N. Culpepper of N. Applestreet was injured when a truck carrying her and two other women crashed into a parked car owned by Frank Malone in the 700 block of W. Main street Thursday night. Culpepper was treated at a hospital and released. her condition was not serious.

Fatal double shooting near Gainesville ends in murder suicide

R M Wood 48 employed as a company manager and Jackie Davis 27 were found dead in a rented car near Gainesville Florida. Authorities say Wood shot Davis three times then killed himself with a fourth shot. Powder burns suggest close range. Davis had departed Tuesday night and was found with Wood in the car. The mother reported the missing woman prompting investigation by the sheriff.

Fire destroys home near Dothan on Cottonweel road

Fire believed started on a stove destroyed the home of Fred Marnes on Cottonweel road early Thursday. The contents were lost and four adults were unable to escape. neighbors managed to save two people from the blaze.

Mollison Opens Trans Atlantic Hop to United States

British distance flyer J A Mollison started from Port Marnock at 11 35 am for a round trip over the north Atlantic. He plans to stop at Harbor Grace Newfoundland refuel then fly to Roosevelt Field Long Island and return to Croydon England without further stops. If successful he would be the first solo east to west flight and first north Atlantic crossing in a single plane. He hopes the trip lasts no more than two and a half days. Columbia Baptist meeting draws about 150 attendees

About 150 people attended the annual all day meeting of the Columbia Baptist association at Smyrna church near Dothan. Dothan speakers included Dr. L W Dockery and Judge Harry K Martin. other leaders from Alabama and Tennessee spoke or directed sessions and singing. Lunch was served on the church grounds.
