The fourth quarterly conference of Foster Street Methodist Church will be held at 7 30 tonight with Dr W F Calhoun urging attendance. Officers for the next conference year will be nominated and elected.
Livestock arrivals at eight major packing plants in Georgia Florida and Alabama totaled about 400 cattle 200 calves and 600 hogs. Composite quotations for hogs varied by weight with barrows and gilts at 25.50 to 26.50 for 240 to 270 pounds and 23 to 24 for lighter lots, with medium to good hogs also priced across several weight classes. Sows ranged from 20 to 22.50.

Police said a 9 attractive woman fought off assailants as footprints directed investigators to two slayers. Four white youths held near Sarasota, with a .22 rifle found in a car and a scarf with possible blood spots in the glove box. Suspects named Harold Renner, L. G. Rhodes, Norman Ham, and Thomas Wineten. No charges yet. two African Americans also questioned without charges.
Thirteen Angus beef calves were delivered to 4-H club members at 11 yesterday for fattening as 4-H projects and for the fatstock show next year. The 13 bring the county total to 17 calves this year, with weights ranging 470 to 620 pounds and an average of 541 pounds. Names include Nathan Branton, Kenneth West, Johnny Mack Cook, Tommy Kirkland, Foy Branton, Louise McCardle, Lamar Dozier, Olivia Lewis, Bobby G. Cobb, Billy Snell, and George Robert Cameron from Dothan and Pansey routes.
New Orleans advances a third bid to crown the United States as its largest port via the International Trade Mart. Opened in July, the mart houses 120 firms, including 600 nationwide displays, with space held for foreign buyers and selected manufacturers. Argentina and Venezuela have options. Belgium has rented space. The tax free, not for profit venture stems from local business leaders and civic groups backed by bonds totaling $1.5 million. It marks the third phase of a four point plan including International House and a free trade zone, with a tidewater canal pending congressional approval.
At the hospital the exact nature of Babe Ruth’s ailment was not disclosed. Ruth’s wife and two adopted daughters, his sister, and others were present as he declined after a long illness. The report notes his career highs and his earlier health struggles and hospitalizations.
Memorial Hospital announced Babe Ruth died from cancer that began in the nasopharynx and spread to at least three body areas. Autopsy confirmed metastasis with initial tumor in the neck and additional cancer sites, treated by X rays and radium implants.
Cleveland AP report details Paul Mantz of Burbank California planning to attempt on September 4 a record third Bendix transcontinental high speed air race. Mantz flies a P 51 Mustang that last year won $10,000 with a 460 mph run in a 2050 mile race from Los Angeles to Cleveland. The event opens the National Air Races and carries $23,000 in prize money with about 20 top speed pilots expected to compete, including rivals Joe DeBusa and Edmund Pol onken in similarly equipped planes.
Twenty civil cases scheduled for trial in the fall term of Circuit Court begin September 20. The calendar lists damage suits and related actions for Monday through Thursday, with parties including Melinda Guilford, Co. E. Price, Leonard Wills pro ams, City of Dothan, James F. Spears, Bankers Fire and Marine Insurance, and others.
In Germany a duck was shot by Lt. Ernest G. Strom of Sepyinaw Minnesota and fell into a Bavarian lake at Sandhof. Strom swam after the duck but became entangled in weeds and drowned, an Army announcement said.

Crawford Mosley city recreation director received plans to convert the Baker lot into a recreation center with a swimming pool softball diamond and playground equipment. About 60 persons were injured when ten cars of the Great Northern Western Oriental Limited derailed near Rugby North Dakota. Thirty five injured were brought to hospital. two listed in critical condition early today. Three coaches sleepers and a diner left tracks and toppled. The rest stayed upright. Passengers said the train was moving slowly at the time, around 45 mph, on a St Paul to Seattle run.
Number 10 Carnegie Endowment denies any part in the elite Communist underground described by Whittaker Chambers. Hiss, the accuser, says he doesn't know Chambers. Chambers testified he left communism in 1937 after underground contacts with Hiss. Both testified under oath as committee members acknowledge uncertainty about who is telling the truth. The panel may test Hiss with a lie detector. his wife may be questioned. Chambers has another closed hearing before August 25, with a possible September 7 resumption including witness Mrs Oksana Kosenkina, a Russian teacher injured after jumping from a Soviet consulate window.
November 14 report notes party leaders urge success of the Thurmond Wright effort while Alabama electors pledge to that ticket and dispute over civil rights remains secondary at the convention. Langan denounces States Rights Democrats and says the civil rights issue is not enough to wreck the Democratic party.
Chicago prices drift lower in today’s board session with occasional wheat rallies from mill and commercial buying. Nearby corn contracts saw brief covering while overall tone remained heavy. oats held firm before declines. September figures show corn down about 2 cents, oats down mid-tens, and soybeans lower as well.

Arthur Edward Tew died at his home on Clio route one Saturday after an extended illness. He leaves a widow, six daughters including Mrs Clyde Aikinson and Miss Nettie Tew, six sons such as Roy C. Tew and James Tew, two sisters and two brothers. Funeral was held Sunday at 11 am at Spring Hill Baptist Church with Rev. J. B. Shir chair officiating.
The body of John J. Whigham, killed in Luxembourg during World War II at age 18, arrives in Enterprise for military rites. Veterans of Foreign Wars will escort him to the graveside at First Baptist Church, with burial in the city cemetery. Survived by parents and multiple siblings.
In Frankfurt, Clay commented on stalled negotiations with Western diplomats maintaining the current program. He said a quadripartite peace with Germany is the government’s aim. When asked about resigning if a Western German government plan collapses, he quipped that soldiers don’t resign.
