AP report cites Soviet withdrawal from Ossow area amid German thrusts in East Prussia and Carpathians. Battles rage near Insterbruck and near Krakow flank threats loom from Krosno northwest, with reports of river bend offensives on the Vistula and impacts on Polish cities.
The World Today reports Allied forces forming a solid front in western France, with advances within forty miles of key towns and evacuations near Chartres. East Prussian operations continue as German radio notes patrols near strategic lines. Army troops capture and push toward Falaise while surrounding actions press German defense.
AP report cites American losses in Normandy from June 6 to August 6 at 16,434 killed 76,535 wounded and 19,704 missing. Secretary McCloy notes German forces trapped near Falaise and praises coordination of the August 15 southern France operation with low Allied casualties overall.
Washington report on plans to deploy additional war prisoners to help harvest Alabama peanuts. The fourth service command in Atlanta promised a new allocation for the Southeast in the year. Representatives Carlson and Woodruff doubted action soon, saying substantial work remains before next year.
Paris endures a German radio report claiming the city is a front line area with chaos, food shortages, and police strikes. Berlin broadcasts say guns can be heard, Notre Dame prayers rise, and gendarmes sink while Paris relies on community kitchens for meals and food from 10 39 pm to midnight.
Allied air forces led by American heavy bombers based in Italy and 1200 RAF heavies from England struck Kiel and Stettin. The raid dumped about 5 600 tons of explosives before dawn, damaging Baltic port facilities as Mosquitos hammered Berlin and western front targets. President Roosevelt returned to Washington from a 15000 mile Pacific war tour and said Allied forces will occupy Germany and Japan even if resistance fails short of borders. He vowed Germany cannot dodge occupation and discussed plans with leaders, while France’s landings and allied advances continued.
Senator Bankhead and Randolph claim OPA has done little to end a sit down strike by Mills and cotton producers. They accuse the agency of failing to provide parity pricing and criticise interim textile increases as insufficient while urging congressional action.
Court officials today criticised the laxity of witnesses summoned to appear before the grand jury. Circuit solicitor Keener Baxley said those who failed to appear in several instances were jailed for contempt or ordered to pay attachment costs. It marked the first time in years that a grand jury was forced to issue attachment proceedings to proceed with investigations. The circuit court did not name the witnesses involved.
Allied planes struck 11 Japanese bases as Nimitz declared a nonstop Pacific war and Roosevelt vowed to occupy Japan after surrender talks. Admiral Nimitz said Fifth and Third fleets would keep up continuous attacks, using Guam Saipan and Tinian as springboards for large-scale offensives. Tokyo claimed U.S. air power was three times Japan’s but remained confident of victory.
On his Guam visit Admiral Nimitz pledged fierce Pacific action using the fleet under Spruance and Halsey. He praised the home front for support and outlined plans to seize Saipan Tinian and Guam as bases for further moves. He said the United States would not withhold strength and would strike while reinforcement prospects grow in Europe.
Secretary of State Hull said the Big Four would not coercively dominate the world and that Governor Dewey’s fears are unfounded. He noted Moscow declaration support for general international organization based on sovereign equality and open to all states, and tied his stance to the Connally resolution.
Allied forces pushed toward Paris as Patton’s Third Army neared with spearheads less than miles from the capital. Canadian troops captured Falaise, narrowing the Falaise pocket to seven miles as the Seine and Loire fronts widened the southern flank. Berlin reports warned of food shortages in Paris while authorities urged calm.
AP dispatch from St Malo, France details a rugged infantry assault to clear Nazi pillboxes on the ridge near the port. Lt Joan Pisarcik from Simpson, Pennsylvania, known as a "One Man Army," earned a Bronze Star and Purple Heart as his unit seized the position and captured 35 German prisoners.
