The State Experiment Station favors Austrian Winter peas over Hairy Vetch as the best winter cover crop for Southeast Alabama. Plant 20–30 pounds per acre. inoculate. sow in October. peas may be broadcast and covered 1–3 inches. Austrian peas turn under earlier, boost corn yields, and can reduce corn acreage by about 60 percent while doubling yield. advise converting 4 acres per plow to Austrian Winter peas.

Island Homes Becomes Biology Laboratory

PUT-IN-BAY Ohio Historic Gibraltar Island in Lake Erie once the summer home of Jay Cooke has been turned into a biology laboratory. The site is described as the finest inland marine scientific plant in the United States and was formerly dedicated as the Franz Theodore Stone biological laboratory of Ohio State University. It is named for Julius F Stone, longtime chairman of the university board of trustees who purchased the island and donated it to the school.
