Hoover notes echo in Europe as Japan reads Manchuria line
President Hoover’s acceptance speech on debts and disarmament drew favorable notices from European capitals though officials held comment until details arrived. Japan, angered by Stimson remarks on Manchuria, saw another thrust aimed at the Manchurian incident. Germany praised inter continental cooperation and disarmament appeal, while Italy eyed disarmament references with interest. Le Temps hailed Hoover’s stance as American doctrine. Hoover, buoyed by a flood of telegrams, thanked the public for support of his stated principles. Prohibition debate mounted, with Methodist official Wilson doubting votes from veterans and drys aligning with past support. Rep. Rayburn commented then the piece continued on the back.
