In Gadsden Alabama on August 12 AP reports tax collector John Cap and chief clerk Howard Cornelius were arrested on embezzlement warrants tied to a $20 000 shortage. Board chair W F Jeffers and members Roe Tinsley Tom Bailey were charged for failing to keep records along with M C Durham and W E Chumney for related offenses. Two others indicted but not arrested.
Secretary Ickes warned unemployed men not to migrate in search of public works work. Reports of futile migration reached the public works administrator as the N I R A fund of 3 3 billion dollars requires local labor preference.
A passing officer thwarted an attempted robbery at Singletary and Whiddon store last night. The rear door was found blocked open with a block of salt wedged to keep it from closing. Patrolman Pat Warrick alerted authorities and store officials. the door was resecured and no goods were missing after a check. Police believe the thief was locked inside at closing time.
Mayor L C Exell and Mrs. Exell returned from Osage Iowa after visiting their seriously ill daughter Mrs Hearst Duncan. Duncan's condition improved and she rapidly recovers. Council President W F M acted as mayor during Exell's absence.
Houston county announces the 1933 34 school year will start September 18 with three consolidated schools Columbia Ashford and Rehoboth opening. Cottonwood Madrid and Webb likely open that day. others begin October 2. Indefinite contracts issued to teachers and bus drivers.
Fiumicino Italy Aug 12 General Italo Balbo and his air armada completed a 1200 mile flight to Chicago and returned today to cheers from hundreds of thousands of spectators.
Jersey City reports Inspector Wilson said Anthony Sparka alias Rena of Hawthorne confessed to being one of two men who kidnapped pawnbroker Fred Taub on the Bowery in New York and demanded 10000 dollars for his release. Taub was found in a Jersey City rooming house after Sparka’s arrest by Capt Brady and three detectives. The pair reportedly forced Taub to strip and took 200 dollars plus two watches.
New York July cotton mill activity reached 117 percent of the 1922 average, a record for the month, with last July at 54 percent and the prior July peak at 110 percent in 1827. The rise followed rising prices after the bank holiday as wholesalers retailers and consumers replenished stocks.

Railway detectives report five men robbed several stores and a railway station in Ramer last night escaping with loot and about 200 dollars. They fled toward Dothan in a sedan of a popular make, containing shirts, cleaver cigarettes and men's handkerchiefs. Local officers were alerted to stop the car if seen.
The 1933 Farm Credit Act creates local cooperative production credit associations under government supervision. The government may provide four-fifths of capital with borrowers supplying five percent of loan as stock. Officials urge broad membership and statewide efficiency for better administration and lower unit costs.
In Paramus New Jersey on August 12 AP reports Arthur Arnott was accused by his wife in court of striking her seven times. Judge Abram Lebson sentenced Arnott to seven nights in jail from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. each day to go to work.
The S. A. Mullins tax office reports the first county letter from Scotland offering payment of unpaid poll taxes. It came from M. F. Kinsaul of the UW Navy stationed at Greenneach Scotland, requesting his and his wife’s unpaid taxes for several years and noting plans to return home and vote in the next election.
In Kansas City an early morning gun battle left three men dead after Sheriff Thomas Bush interrupted a two car firing. The victims were Ferris Anthon Sam Hogg and Gus Fasone with two assistants also slain. Fasone and Hogg pursued Anthon when Bush intervened firing a riot gun.

In Tuscaloosa Alabama on August 12 AP reports a shift in policy as Chief Billingsley invites cyclists to ride sidewalks in residential areas due to auto danger, reversing earlier strict sidewalk prohibitions and police rebukes for sidewalk riding.
Central east Gulf States expect considerable cloudiness with occasional coastal showers at the start and more general showers by week’s end. Temperatures show no material change and no tropical disturbances are reported.
A. Mullins the tax collector told The Eagle today he supports delaying advertising of delinquent tax property. He says arrears should wait until fall due to the New Deal mood and outlook, preventing farmers in Houston County from added costs from tax sale notices.
President Roosevelt, traveling from Hyde Park to Washington, left his special train at Harrisburg Virginia and rode in an automobile through the Shenandoah valley. A large crowd welcomed him as he smiled and waved. He plans to inspect civilian conservation corps camps on his first visit to the area. Cuban situation updates were briefed before the caravan proceeded.
In Atlanta on August 12 the Superior Court supported the NRA in restraining J. W. Vanditch from charging 25 cents for a haircut when 40 cents was the agreement among NRA code barbers. The Atlanta Master Barbers Association sought the order claiming the lower price unfairly competes with code shops. About 242 shops in the city had signed the code and agreed to a minimum wage of 14.50 dollars per week.
William A. Sutherland of Atlanta was named solicitor for the Tennessee Valley Authority. He will supervise the Authority's legal work under David B. Lillenthal. Sutherland, a Harvard graduate who has practiced in Atlanta since 1921, earned the post on Felix Frankfurter’s recommendation.
Springfield Missouri August 12 Alby James M Moore 26 year old high school teacher was arrested near Ozark after the Christian County Bank was robbed of 168 dollars Sheriff Joe Monger said a pistol and 468 dollars were found in Moore s car The youth who taught science and mathematics denied involvement claiming two kidnappers released him after being blindfolded and bound to a tree He said he was held captive until shortly afternoon today

Washington August twelve. Employees of electric light and power, telephone, canning, and construction join recovery wage and work time supervision under modified presidential re employment agreements approved by Hugh Johnson. Over 1.5 million workers affected and 50 000 new jobs created bringing total temporary wage and hour agreements to sixty four. Six permanent codes now in effect.
The Chester R. Vickery post of the American Legion pledges cooperation with President Roosevelts program to enact the National Industrial Recovery Act. Legionnaires recall World War I service in the Argonne and vow to enlist for the duration of the war to restore contentment and prosperity to American homes.
In Nashville delegates at Tennessee's constitutional convention voted for repeal of the prohibition amendment. After adjournment a group formed to pursue repeal. In the July 20 statewide election 63 repeal-pledged delegates won by about 12,6900 to 120,100. the convention vote stood 57 to 0 though not all 63 were present.
Rev D W Haskew announced special eleven oclock services at the Lafayette Street Methodist Church for tomorrow. With many local pastors away, he invites congregations from all churches to attend these services outlining an ecumenical gathering.
