Principal government leaders met at the Cuban presidential palace to decide whether Machado should relinquish the presidency to end violence. Ambassador Cintas asked the State Department for an interview with President Roosevelt in hopes of addressing Cuba’s violent situation.
In Meridian Mississippi police detained a man claiming the name Henkle as a suspect in the death of Oliver Bailey 27 a socially prominent Cincinnati resident. Bailey was found beaten to death near Cincinnati early Sunday police noted the suspect wore shabby clothing despite a flashy roadster.
City council once ordered a light at the high school to deter necking parties. The light was never installed and romancing in the dark has continued, angering nearby residents who urged immediate action.
Pan Am Petroleum Corp paid two cents a gallon in taxes for months after the excise was cut to one cent. The city council ruled the excess tax could be applied to a city debt claimed by the oil firm and denied a rebate. City auditor J. L. Vaughn presented the figures to the council.
John Walker sues the town of Webb in Circuit Court for 600 dollars claiming unlawful arrest and imprisonment by Webb servants or agents from 4 p.m. May 17 to 7 a.m. May 18 on a larceny charge.
In the Azores Aug 9 an Italian aviator died after a flying boat overturned during takeoff for Lisbon. One other aviator died earlier near Amsterdam amid the armada's long voyage home, while three crew members were injured. The ships reached Lisbon seven hours after departure.
In Uniontown Pennsylvania on August 9 striking Southwestern Pennsylvania coal miners urged the National Recovery Administration to intervene at the Frick Coke Co Grindstone mine. Two hundred miners at the pit reported that mine officials refused the check weighman and the miners committee, with similar incidents halting returns at other mines.
Arizona voters approve the federal amendment repeal by more than three to one. Returns from 313 of 444 precincts show 31 368 for repeal and 9 004 against. Democratic Idabella Greenway wins sole U.S. House seat with no Republican opposition. Governor notes personal dry stance but supports Roosevelt policy.
Montgomery Alabama August 9. City commission adopts ordinance levying licenses on wholesale and retail 3.2 beer dealers. Licenses cost 150 for wholesalers and manufacturers 150 for bottlers and retailers pay 35. Sam McDade will issue solutions Wednesday for remaining tax year. Despite state law prohibition 3.2 beer sales are common in the city.
The Alabama Power Co billed the city for electric current used after June 20 when the city stopped buying from the company. The council rejected payment, with Councilman T H McEntyre noting the bill and demand charge for equipment left at the plant would not be paid.
Two bridges on Lucy road near Gordon are closed for repairs the rest of the week. County road superintendent C C McEachin says one span will cost 125 dollars and the other 180 dollars to repair.
Councilman J. P. Botts filed suit in circuit court against his daughter Evelyn Botts for $2,000 in damages claiming injuries from a March 31 automobile accident near Opelika. He says his arm was broken in two places and seeks $750 in special damages for three months unable to work.
City officials plan a campaign to recover franchise taxes from Standard Telephone Co branch here. Councilman B H Lisenby and aldermen say taxes have been unpaid for over 20 years. City Clerk I P Scarborough has no record of payments since an ordinance set 3 percent of gross receipts. Further review could change the outcome.
Postmaster S. M. Dawsey announced that a revised roll of honor of Dothan employers cooperating with the National Industrial Recovery Act will be received tomorrow. The list includes firms signing wage and employment covenants with President Roosevelt. The first honor roll was posted in the federal building last week.

More than 1,000 Houston county property owners owe current taxes with over 400 farmers among them. Officials propose a temporary moratorium on sales until fall to allow harvest cash flow and reduce costs. Judge J. J. Speight and local readers back postponement to October or November if delinquent payers present August 14 before Judge Harry K. Martin.

Construction of the Shall Petroleum Co filling station at Main and Oates started today, employing about 20 men. The concrete building will have a steel shell, with total cost around 4500 dollars. Permit delays due to Shell company red tape held up the project. six weeks are expected to finish it.
