208 Miles Of Paving Planned In Houston Postwar Project

Houston County will join Alabama in a postwar term-to-market road program under Sparks administration. County road supervisor Fred L. Mullins said surveys are underway and by November 1 three projects totaling 27 miles of paved road should be completed. The program total calls for 206 miles of paving with about half funded by federal aid and shared costs by county and state.

Gasoline Books To Be Updated With New 1644 Tag Numbers

Houston County motorists must present all gasoline ration books to the War Price and Rationing Board for tagging changes to 1644 license numbers. About 4,000 books require certification, with 104 license tags issued October 1 and current tags expiring November 1.

War Prisoners Aid In Gathering Crops

Sub torpedo sinks Brazilian steamer Bage with 78 missing

The Brazilian passenger steamer Bage was torpedoed off Sergipe on July 31, with 78 passengers and crew reported missing. The ship carried 129 passengers and a 102 crew, and 41 were accounted for. Some survivors arrived at Aracaju, suggesting the sinking occurred near the coast. The vessel carried rubber fibers and cotton, and 14 Brazilian ships had been sunk by submarines up to that date.

Sugar rationing to rise for commercial users

Detroit based Price Administrator Prentice Brown announced a 10 percent increase in sugar allotments for commercial users such as bakeries candy makers and soft drink firms effective within days.
