Guadalcanal Day remembered by Dothan veterans
Two Dothan men and former Marines from the First Marine Division recall the August 7, 1942 Guadalcanal landing marking the start of Pacific battles. Max Jeffries and Lamar Miller, now in civilian life, visited a Marine recruiting office as they shared memories with current Leathernecks. Jeffries, in the second wave, and Miller, with the Eleventh Artillery, describe the dawn assault and the long campaign that followed. Miller remains a filling station operator, married with one child. Jeffries, a linotype operator, is married and holds multiple medals but not the Purple Heart.
