City Council Defeats Special Counsel Hire Bill
A council measure to authorize special attorneys to recover city fees from City Attorney S. Lew failed and was referred to the finance committee and Auditor-Treasurer Vaughn for talks with Lew before the next meeting. Lew had reported $16.25 still owed by the city and earlier fees totaling $6,748.75, including a tax suit won against Houston National Bank. The bank had refused a 15 percent dividend claiming the case was not closed with prejudice, allowing possible set offs. Council debated legality and excessive charges, delaying action amid opposition.
