Escape and peril aboard Java bound old Dutch cruiser
Ensign Parrish of Dothan recalls the perilous Java escape aboard a Dutch cruiser. He recounts leaving Yap before the Japanese struck, boarding Langley after a transfer and witnessing a three hour wave attack that doomed the carrier but left few casualties. Survivors were rescued by Pecos and escort destroyers Pope and Pillsbury.

Surviving Pecos crew rescued after raft ordeal
Ensign Parrish led 32 Pecos survivors adrift about four and a half days before being smashed ashore on Australia’s mainland near Windham and Broome. They lived on scant rations with no water, prayed and read scripture, some suffering shock. One man died from blood loss and was buried at sea. The group was rescued by a seaplane from Java and taken to Perth hospital.
