Body of Recluse Found Near Plantation in Natchez

Miss Jane Merrill, an elderly recluse, was found shot to death in a thicket near her antebellum plantation in Natchez. An old army coat was the only clue as investigators searched after a friend found bloodstained furniture and walls with three bullet marks. Merrill, daughter of former ambassador Ayres Merrill, had few visitors and kept others out. The sheriff suspects robbers or a deranged person.

Five Arrested Here After Fight In Dothan

Five young Dothan men were jailed on assault and battery drunkenness and automobile break in charges after a free-for-all fight that stretched from N Foster Street to the post office late Thursday. Ben Dempsey received facial and arm cuts after a clash with Edwin Whatley. Green Wilson and Gordon Melton faced related charges.

Meeting of Salvation Army Advisers in Dothan

The Salvation Army advisory board meets this afternoon at 5 at Foster Street Methodist church to reorganize the board. Eleven members serve on the board with City Auditor J L Vaughn as chairman for over two years. The date for the next Salvation Army funds campaign in Dothan is expected to be set at the meeting.

Board of Control Named for Auburn

A three member board of trustees was selected to oversee the Alabama Polytechnic Institute pending a permanent head. Members are J. J. Wimere, dean of engineering. Dr. George Petrie, dean of the graduate school. and L. N. Duncan, director of extension work. The board will choose its chairman.

Alabama to Start $5 Million State Road Relief Project

The federal funds total 5 116 000 and must be spent by July 1 1933. Work begins by August 10 on 12 projects totaling 1 75 million under Gov Miller and highway director Langdon Smith. Alabama residents, ex soldiers with dependents favored, 30 hour weeks, staggers. Potential expansion via a $300 million relief loan from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation for highway use.

No Reply in Tennessee Case of Held Couple

No reply from Sweetwater authorities about Alonzo Sanders and Mabel Mae Garrett was received. Sheriff Joe Rollins reported the couple, taken Thursday, remain in custody as officers seek the girl’s parents. The girl had approached the welfare department for help amid conflicting statements.

Funeral for World War Veteran Burdeshaw in Kinsey

World War veteran F. L. Burdeshaw died in a Alexandria La hospital after a 10 day stay. The Kinsey Baptist church held his funeral with Rev. Jones officiating. Burial followed in Kinsey cemetery. He is survived by three children, four brothers, and one sister.

The Southern Experiment Station and US Bureau of Mines plan to revive gold mining in Alabama Georgia and the Carolinas. Led by B W Gandred the study aims to find a method to treat Southern gold ores and reestablish profitable operations in Appalachian districts and former gold regions.

Bridge at Flowers Chapel Washed Out by Heavy Rains

The bridge at Flowers Chapel west of Dothan was washed out by recent heavy rains and will be repaired early next week. The 48 foot span suffered damage along with several small washouts across the county. About 200 feet of fill at the Drew bridge over the Chochattoochee river was also washed away.

Hoke Shiver, held on a $509 bond, faces an assault with intent to murder charge after county officers arrested him yesterday. Chester Pelham swore out the warrant, alleging Shiver attacked him with a loaded walking stick.

Mrs E E Odom Dies In Dothan Hospital

Mrs E E Odom fifty three died in a Dothan hospital Thursday afternoon after a long illness. A former resident of Thomasville Georgia she had been living with her daughter Mrs Emory Moody since last September. Survivors include another daughter Mrs Roy Elmore of Thomasville three sons W H Odom of Canton H Odom of Newark N J and Sean Odom of Dothan. Funeral will be held at 724 Colquitt Street Thomasville at the home of Mrs Emory tomorrow afternoon with Rev Siles Johnson officiating Fellowes Forrester are in charge of arrangements. The body was sent to Thomasville to await burial.

Five County Drug Stores Earn Perfect July Sanitary Grades

Five drug stores in Dothan area received top sanitary grades of 10 for the month of July. Fire Still Burns After Estimated 6 Million Loss

In Chicago on August 5 an enormous blaze gutted a grain elevator and meat packing works. The fire injured over a hundred firefighters and workers, with damage pegged at 6 million dollars. Estimated losses included 800 hogs 60 cattle 200 sheep 2 500 000 pounds of ham and bacon 300 tons of fertilizer and three boats in the Chicago river. Dust explosion in stored grain is blamed for the disaster.

Dr. A F Harman, Alabama state superintendent, received a letter from George A Osborne, senior inspector in Melbourne, praising Alabama's elementary course. He notes its thoroughness and requests a copy of the bulletin on health and physical education as a helpful reference for Australian schools. The program was adapted for first six grades in 1936.

Alabama warns on unregistered out of state stock tipsters

The Alabama Securities Commission launches a publicity campaign against unregistered out of state stock brokers who peddle tips to Alabama investors by phone. Capt. W. C. Oates warns the public to verify registration before any securities dealings and cites Chicago firms C. L. Strauss Company and Roanoke Securities as active but unregistered.

Dothan Schools Face Closure Affects 3900 Pupils

The planned opening of Dothan city and Houston county schools faces doubt as city officials and the school board seek a solution. A mass P T A meeting at the courthouse is set for Saturday 10 30 a m to urge Governor Miller to call a special legislative session to resolve back salaries and funding. Opportunity schools enroll 3,680 white youths July

In July 21 Alabama counties reported 3,680 white participants in 134 opportunity schools under the state education division. Seventy two enrolled for the first time and 1,205 achieved perfect attendance. Counties Marion Tusokowa Lamar Parbour and Escambia led enrollment. Negro schools enrolled 6,879 across 257 sites with 2,975 beginners and 2,455 with perfect attendance.

Prisoner Snatches Deputy Gun Kills Officer in Escape

Hastings Minn August 5 A posse captured two men after one seized a deputy's revolver in the jail office and killed Deputy Rudolph Ficher. The men were chased through cornfields and woods until surrendering. Dewey Sharp, a former convict, tossed his bee gun and gave up. Harold Wilder was captured in a cornfield. Sharp accused Wilder of the killing during the escape attempt.
