Unemployment tops four million in July Census report shows
Washington AP figures show unemployment rising above four million in July for the first time since January 1942 while employment also increases to 50,720,000 amid a 417,000 rise in the civilian labor force. Unemployment reached 4,095,000 with 4.7 percent rise in nonagricultural jobs. The Census Bureau notes most new labor force entrants were older youth or adults, and farm employment fell while overall labor force growth did not fully explain the rise in job seekers.
