Hardwick Unwraps Civil Service Bills

State Senator W Guy Hardwick previews two City of Dothan civil service measures. One creates a civil service system for most city workers, with a political ban and appeals process, plus a Citizens Advisory Committee and a Civil Service Board. The companion retirement plan funds benefits through employee deductions.

Civil Service And Retirement Bills For Dothan

Provisions create a city Civil Service and retirement system for Dothan employees excluding the city recorder and police and fire chiefs. Existing workers stay in place during good behavior with possible removal for cause. A three member Civil Service Board, appointed by the Citizens Advisory Committee, will configure terms of two, four and six years first, then six years. Members must be Dothan residents, qualified voters, and cannot hold other offices.

Temporary Bridge Shipped To Geneva

Probate Judge P C Black said Senators Hill and Sparkman and Rep George Andrews in Washington reported the temporary Bailey bridge for Pea River had been shipped from Voorheesville New York. The two 150 foot spans will be transferred to the L and N for the final leg and receive right of way due to the emergency. It is expected to reach Geneva within five days to replace the collapsed bridge that killed two men.

Chinese Communists Free Two US Officers After 34 Days Solitary

Maj. Robert Rigg of Chicago and Capt. John Collins of Evanston were held in solitary confinement for 34 days by Chinese Communists and faced a death penalty if tried for espionage by a people's court. Gen. Chu Teh intervened to order their release, and the officers were escorted into Nationalist territory yesterday.

Three Dothan Residents Hurt In Auto Crash

Three Dothan residents were treated for minor injuries at a Dothan hospital after a collision at N Oates and Reeves streets Friday night. The car was driven by Ted Riley and collided with a taxi driven by Charles M Scott. Lucille Peterson was a taxi passenger.

Rep. George Andrews reports a Post Office Department inspector will visit Dothan and Napier Field to assess steps toward restoring mail service. Presbyterian Chapel Opens on Airport Road Today

The Evergreen Presbyterian Chapel on the municipal airport road opens at 2 p.m. announced by Pastor J. Norton Dendy of the First Presbyterian Church. Ground donated by the late N. H. McCalhar of Doutan, construction began last fall and finished in January. Dendy will lead services on the second and fourth Sundays at 3 p.m. and Sunday school starts at 2 p.m. with directors Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Jackson.

Hartley Sentenced To Life In Prison For Hammer Slaying

Abbeville reports Joe Hartley faces life in prison for the hammer arrow killing of his wife Lillian. Hartley, held in the Abbeville jail, offered no defense in court and spoke only with his lawyer and son Thomas Ivey Hartley. Crowds filled the courtroom as Hartley entered pleas by counsel and the case proceeded to trial.

Evalyn Walsh McLean, owner of the Hope diamond and famed Washington society host, died in her Friendship mansion at 6:15 PM after pneumonia. She was 60. Survived by sons John in Texas and Edward in Colorado Springs. daughter Evalyn Reynolds had died seven months earlier. MALARTIC Que AP Hope of rescuing alive 11 miners trapped by fire since Thursday in the No 4 shaft of the Malartic gold mines was abandoned last night. A director of the mines said there was no doubt the men had perished after sixteen were trapped underground when the fire broke out. One died Thursday and four escaped before the air feed from above was damaged yesterday afternoon.
