Recruits Routed to Fort Benning from Wiregrass Region

The Wiregrass detachment shifts from Dothan to Fort Benning by train at 12 50 p m en route after a late change from Ft McClellan plans. Recruits rise from 25 to 37 with a two week conditioning period at Benning before forest camp work under army supervision. Recruits hail from Pike Butler Barbour Geneva Houston Henry Covington Crenshaw and other counties with a roster listing many names and routes.

Farmer and Family Escape Death in Burning House

Jim Barton, a tenant farmer near Taylor, his wife and children, barely escaped a dawn blaze that consumed their home. They fled at 1 a.m. as the roof collapsed, saving nothing from inside. The house, owned by D. G. Clark, was insured for 400 dollars, with an estimated value of 1000 dollars. the furniture remained uninsured.

New York April 27 AP Mrs Fay Webb Vallee wife of Rudy Vallee named defendant in a 100000 dollar affection suit filed in supreme court by Mrs Kathleen Leon wife of Garfield Leon an actor. The complainant alleged during the present month Mrs Vallee induced Leon to leave his wife. A summons in the subway service on Mrs Vallee April 7. A few days earlier counsel for Vallee had announced that the Vallees have finally definitely reached the port of the ways.

Five Negroes Convicted in Tallapoosa County Riot

In Dadeville five Negro defendants Judson Simpson Ned Cobb Sam Moss Clinton Moss and Alf White were found guilty of assault with intent to murder after a jury deliberated one hour and forty minutes. Sentences ranging five to fifteen years were imposed with appeals noted by defense attorney Irving Schwab. Authorities indicated similar pending cases against fourteen other Negroes.

Two Hilton teachers recover from collision injuries

Two Hilton Georgia teachers Miss Edna Clark and Miss Ann Tolbert, injured when a truck and automobile collided near Columbia weeks ago, have recovered enough to go home. Mrs. Gordon Hall, also injured in the same crash, remains in hospital but shows marked improvement.

Bridge Closed For Repairs In County

The Burnt Min bridge over the Little Choctawhatchie River in the west end of the county was ordered closed by the county highway department for two weeks while repairs to the span are made.
