AP reports Congressman from Alabama proposed a plan to dispose of vast military supplies. The measure, backed by House Expenditures Committee members, aims to prevent a sudden market shock and requires an organization or private enterprise to manage the sale.
In Medjes Medor northern Tunisia British forces repel a thrust by the Associates Preag Bima, with tanks and five infantry units. The engagement sees British troops destroy an attack and capture about 500 prisoners.
German assaults in the Kuban Valley continue at night with heavy forces including tanks and planes to break the Red Army line along the Sea of Azov. Senator Wheeler seeks delay on a draft exemption for fathers and proposes amendments to the Selective Service Act to curb drafting of older and single men and to force action on unemployment benefits for conscientious objectors.
Soviet forces report heavy fighting as ANs troops breach Gret line defenses but are cut down by machine gun, rifle, and mortar fire. The Heston County Board of Revenue plans to seek federal reimbursement for funds spent to acquire land housing Napier Field in Dale County. The City of Dothan will request reimbursement of city funds as well. A resolution requests the War Department exercise its option to buy the land, and copies will go to Senators Bankhead, Hill, and Rep. Steagall. The county and city jointly bought the site for airport use at $182,508 with the city paying most of the cost. the land is leased to the War Department.

Co chairmen Al Flowers and volunteers press households to boost purchases, including a ten percent over quota and school jeep program. In London AP report Lieut Leroy Bugg of Huntsville Alabama and Capt Pervin Youres of Walters Oklahoma piloted a Fortress after a German shell damaged rudder pedals and three engines. Despite loss of control and shell fire the crew maintained formation and continued toward home, fighting engine failures and fighter opposition before reaching safety.
London government sources say Hitler is preparing to use poison gas on the Russian front, prompting Churchill to vow retaliation. British officials inform abroad that gas use would trigger broad reprisals and trigger a unified response across Germany. Berlin radio and German circles quote pledges to use gas only if enemies first employ it. Britain scrambles to check anti gas measures as wartime urgency rises.
Washington AP reports the House voted Easter recess to May 3 and will hold a final showdown on pay as you go tax plan and a modified Rum plan to skip an income tax year. Senate concurrence needed. action on extending the Guffey Coal Act for 120 days discussed. Senate Commerce Committee expected quick approval.
Washington AP The Truman committee urged scientific study to determine usable armed manpower after reporting Allied shipping losses of 12 million tons in 1942, about 7.4 million tons more sunk than built. It noted U.S. output of 8,090,200 dead weight tons and urged increased cargo ship construction and escort measures to offset losses.
The Senate extended the bituminous act by 38 days and sent it to the House for prompt action. A House approved measure would lengthen the extension to 136 days. The Senate also approved a five year extension of the Treasury stabilization fund, now before Roosevelt, to block its use for a postwar currency fund. In Atlanta an ordinance banning public drinking of alcohol was signed, enforcing restrictions on wine and beer in public.
Corpus Christi reports closer U S Mexican relations after talks between President Roosevelt and Mexico's Avila Camacho. They met in Monterrey with warplane activity nearby, stressing continental defense and unity. They discussed postwar policies and joint aims in wartime and peace.
Napier Field officer Harold R. Maher twenty three died in a routing navigation crash near Luverne. The Public Relations Office at Napier Field announced a board of qualified officers will determine the crash cause. Maher was the son of Mrs Mary E Maher of Medford Massachusetts and had been a civil service employee in Massachusetts before enlisting.
British Eighth Army under Gen. Montgomery pushed along the front south of Tunis while Gen. Anderson’s First Army repelled a major assault near Medjez el Bab destroying 27 tanks and seizing 500 Germans. Parachute troops in red berets aided the fight as Axis forces attempted to slow the advance. Allied air power disrupted German bombers, and British gains on the southern front were declared firmly held despite heavy Axis counterattacks.
Secretary of Labor Perkins announced the certification of a coal wage dispute to the National War Labor Board amid regulation failures. She noted coal costs are essential to war production and extended the dispute in the Appian bituminous producing area from North to South America with a one month extension to April 20.
