No New Tax Bills Finding Favor With Florida Legislators
TALLAHASSEE AP It appears no bill to levy new taxes in Florida will fail to reach a floor vote. A House finance committee poll showed insufficient votes for any tax proposal to advance. Only three minor taxes in Governor Warren's plan found favor, while rival sales tax ideas faltered. Governor Warren downplayed the poll, noting no hearings on his proposed measures. First hearings begin today as joint committees hear arguments for and against the 5 million dollar annual room rent tax and his doubled intangibles tax. The doubled intangibles tax drew the strongest support with 14 for and 7 against. Opposition to the room rent tax stood 15 to 8, with similar margins against a phosphate severance tax and a half-cent per gallon fuel oil tax.
