Malone Named Director of Forest Fire Commission

W D Malone of Dotnan joins the Southern States Forestfire Commission board at its seventh annual meeting in Williamsburg Lodge. FE F Dunbar of Troy is reelected president for the sixth time, with W V Shaddix of Double Springs reappointed secretary treasurer. A $60,000 budget is set for the scholastic year starting Sept 1 1947, and $20,000 has been subscribed to the increased fund. The Birmingham headquartered group earns praise for forest education materials for rural schools across the southern states.

Alabama Official Receives Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal

C C Jack Owen associate State Public Service Commissioner yesterday received the distinguished flying cross and the air medal with four gold stars for extraordinary achievement as a Marine dive bomber pilot during World War II. The awards were presented in a hearing room of the Montgomery office.

Marine officer presents medals to Owen for valor in Pacific battles

Maj J L OConnell USMC, in charge of Marine recruiting in Alabama, traveled from Birmingham to present the medals to Owen. Owen received the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement during flights against the enemy in the Philippine Island area from February 25 to March 2, 1945, and was awarded the Air Medal with four gold stars in Hell.

Marine pilot earns four more air medals in World War II

The veteran, a Centerville native, completed 30 combat missions as a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve, receiving four air medals for missions in the Philippine and Bismarck Archipelago areas on December 19, 1944, and February 15, 1945. He returned from the Marines in 1943 and entered Tuscaloosa’s log business before running for aggregate Public Service Commission, defeating veteran Clint Harrison for the port seat.
