L. J. Lunsford home on Montana Street was targeted when a “gang” note demanded $10,000 to reach a hospital. A deaf and dumb man, later revealed not deaf or dumb, spoke with residents and then left. Telephone lines were cut to hinder police, as officers monitored the scene through the night without arrests or a visible attacker.
Montgomery April 20 AP The Lapstey-Luske salary reduction act may rebound as the treasury restricts further net pay. John Doe in the education department received a lump sum after earlier fixed payroll, but the treasury shortfall now blocks additional pay under the December Budget Act.
Residents in the southeastern county hunt for 40 year old Joe Haskew missing since Thursday near a fishing camp on the Chattahoochee river by Gordon. They fear foul play and compare reports to a decayed body found nearby to determine if it is Haskew or another person of African descent.
J P Morgan issued a rare public statement backing President Roosevelt and the treasury department after suspending gold exports. He said the move combats deflationary pressures on prices wages and employment and represents the best course under current circumstances. Morgan distributed copies to reporters and declined further comment.
The War Department moved to begin surveys for Cove Creek Dam with Muscle Shoals and Tennessee Valley development key to House action. An allotment of 60 000 dollars was provided. Engineers at Chattanooga will field thirty survey parties to determine the reservoir overflow.

New York April 20 AP reports the United States ends the gold standard launching a managed currency program. The move devalues the dollar versus European gold currencies and raises prices to restore balance. Federal Reserve governors promise action to inject currency and release funds from closed banks. Senator Thomas backs inflation bill granting the President broad powers to expand currency and pursue silver use via international accords. Rainey criticizes foreign nations’ response and praises the move as statesmanlike.
Tom Mooney, jailed since 1917 for the preparedness day bombing, is ordered for his first outside outing from San Quentin to San Francisco county jail before his trial set for Wednesday. Judge Ward directed the warden to transport him Tuesday.
The Dothan Eagle sponsors a three day cooking school by Mrs. S. R. Dull of Atlanta at the city auditorium next week. Afternoon lectures start 2 o clock with doors open at 1. Admission is free for housewives. Demonstrations cover labor saving kitchen aids, table settings, color in linens and attire for home life.
Florence April 20 AP Winnie Ruth Judd interrupted court as she argued with Lin Orme head of the Arizona Pardons Board during a hearing on clemency. She demanded Jack Halloran and shouted I won't be killed as guards moved to quiet her in the courthouse yard.
An undetermined origin blast destroyed a 10 room house under renovation in a prime Flatbush residential area. The unoccupied building collapsed with no injuries reported. Fire and police investigated the scene for clues.
Sparks dropped on the roof of a dwelling at 1105 E Troy Street shortly before noon today causing minor damage. Less than six shingles were damaged and are expected to cost under three dollars to repair. F. W. Wright occupied the house.
In Cleveland on April 20 thieves used a moving van to haul away a dining room suite a living room suite a bedroom set and four floor lamps from the home of Mr and Mrs Albert Koreny Neighbors reported seeing the van and expressed sympathy for the moving family.
Markets show an upward surge as commodities and stocks gain amid hopes of controlled inflation. Cotton jumps to 7.60 May and 8.00 October while wheat and corn edge higher. New Orleans prices fall. New York trading surges with heavy volume and large block orders.
President Roosevelt acts to control inflation from the gold embargo reaction. Congressional leaders seek constitutional fixes and plan late today to propose a bill allowing the president to direct inflation by issuing currency under the greenback law.
After six years R L Hereford of Birmingham must retry his damage suit in Jefferson circuit court over the death and injury of two cows and a bull. The 1927 incident involved a Birmingham Electric Co street car. The appeals court ordered a new trial citing few witnesses and conflicting stories, due to a newly discovered witness from Shelby County.
P A Franazol won dismissal of a lawsuit over a promissory note when he signed with his teeth. The armless man used a pencil held in his teeth to scrawl a legible signature, convincing the plaintiff he had sued the wrong man.
G H Malone, Southeast Alabama banker, welcomed Roosevelt’s move to end the gold standard saying it speeds normal business, raises wages and purchasing power, and will likely lift prices. He noted cotton rose 40 points yesterday and should stay up.
Dothan merchants and many citizens sign a resolution praising John W Rish Houston County representative for his legislative work. He is noted for defeating a general sales tax and pushing state expenditure restraint during the Miller administration.
William Jefferson Meers, an American once sentenced to death for killing a Juarez waiter, was pardoned by Chihuahua's governor under a cross border exchange. Meers had confused the waiter with a suspect who killed his father, and the Mexican prisoner Jose Carrasco received life in Texas for a payroll slaying.
A tentative Dixie Baseball League schedule lists Dothan as a member with 15 home games in the city and 17 away in the first half of the double season. Outside games with non member teams add two more per week, one here.
Henry county officers opened an investigation into an alleged insurance frame up after Mrs. Comma Davis alias Mrs. Lucile Murphy said Gus McCoy attacked her with a knife near the McCoy home. Gus McCoy is jailed on assault with intent to murder. bond set at 2500. The elder McCoy and details of possible insurance claims await further evidence.
In Poplar Bluff Missouri April 20 AP engineer Charles Ledbetter of Little Rock stayed at the throttle amid burning gasoline and stopped the Missouri Pacific train after a collision with an oil truck at Mo ark. The driver and fireman E F Hurt of Little Rock were killed. The locomotive burned and a fireman was injured while passengers were unharmed.
Rome reports say Italian wearers of English tweeds and Paris gowns are labeled slackers in Fascist press. The Gloriate d'Italia accuses moneyed Italians of spending clothing allowances abroad and threatens lists of offenders if unpatriotic traffic continues.
