Memories stir for vets as G Day parades honor heroes
Hal Boyle recalls a Normandy frontline tale of a tough sergeant nicknamed Shorty. The veteran correspondent notes Marine and Army units across the nation will swap memories as Memorial Day events revive old war stories. Shorty, a compact tester with a salty voice, commanded respect and laughter even as health waned. His push to see units sail overseas shows a soldier’s longing to finish what he began.

Shorty remembered as brave frontline sergeant in war
In a front line jeep near the trenches, officers mourn the death of Shorty a beloved sergeant famed for grit. Despite varicose veins and arteriosclerosis he sought to draw fire with a pistol while companions advanced with carbines. Witnesses recall his Purple Heart, two wound stripes, and vow to honor his memory by finishing off a German machine gun nest.
