Unloaded Gun Foils Jail Break in Gadsden
In Gadsden on April 5 two prisoners escaped Etowah county jail as Tom Griffin Jr. 18 son of Sheriff Griffin halted the escape with an unloaded shotgun. He awoke to a nose on the roof, ran out with the weapon and saw Charles Doyle and Merritt Williams dive to the ground and vanish. A dozen inmates were on the roof ready to flee until Griffin barred them with the shotgun until assist arrived.
