Prevention Is Cheap Treated Seed Boosts Crops

Alabama farmers plant about 2 million dollars worth of seed while warnings say a tiny organism threatens many crops. Treated seed costs under three cents an acre and can raise yields by 16 to 20 percent. Dealers record treatments on the seed tag, and many seed buyers pay no extra for treated seed. Seed can be treated at commercial sites or with homemade equipment, using safe, approved disinfectants. Benefits include earlier planting, better stands, higher yields, disease protection, weed suppression, and higher crop quality, but treated seed should not be used for food or livestock feed.
