A blaze caused heavy damage to a bakery and nearby apartments as residents fled and Chief Fates led an orderly evacuation. Firefighters battled the flames making access difficult amid heat and smoke, while insurance coverage and emergency services scrambled to assess losses and salvage remaining property.

Governor Dix praised the choice as a fit selection for the Empire State.
Captain J. W. Dimmick retires after thirty seven years as clerk of the Federal Court for the Middle District of Alabama. Colonel Harvey E. Jones appointed to succeed, effective Saturday morning by court order. Dimmick, a longtime Montgomery resident and former owner of the Montgomery Street Car Company, has been seriously ill with limited prospects for recovery.
Jack Hardly gave himself up at the Birmingham naval recruiting station on a desertion charge. He had abandoned the battleship Georgia two years ago in an Australian port during World War I and was taken into custody after sending word to the Navy for instructions.
