The American leg of the Russo American telegraph is finished and a submarine cable route is being surveyed. The Russian portion is expected to finish by autumn. Crete's war resumes after rejected peace terms, with fighting reported and war enthusiasm spreading to nearby islands. A US warship departs the Bosphorus to transport Crete fugitives to Greece. James Gordon Bennett Jr offers the yacht Henrietta to the Prince of Wales as a New Year gift, but the Prince declines while praising cordial relations.
