Discovery lifts off on first US manned flight in over two years
Shuttle Discovery and a five man crew launched from Cape Canaveral on the first American manned spaceflight since the Challenger disaster. The 4.5 million pound craft, with redesigned boosters, aimed for a four day mission to deploy a $100 million NASA satellite and conduct experiments, before landing at Edwards Air Force Base.
