NASA managers spent five hours reviewing the shuttle Discovery flight readiness and booster tests. Despite awaiting overnight results on a two stage solid fuel booster, officials expressed optimism a go condition will be declared for liftoff at 8 59 a m CDT Thursday.
Large crowds flock to the Farm Progress Show as Vice President George Bush scheduled to visit. Farm Progress Show Manager Mark Wilson says attendance unlikely to rise much, though more vehicles filled grassy parking by 9:30 a.m. Day two draws larger crowds with about 70,000 expected. Exhibitors praise visitor flow and year after year attendance, with DeKalb Pfizer Genetics and Kinze Manufacturing noting strong Illinois and Wisconsin attendee interest.
A revamped $299.6 billion defense authorization bill, stripped of Star Wars restrictions, sails through a House committee and heads for quick floor approval. Reagan is expected to sign the version vetoed Aug 3. The overall spending stays the same, with $4.1 billion for the SDI and a $100 million boost to strategic missile accounts favoring the MX over the Midgetman.
The welfare overhaul advances after House conferees vote 26 8 and Senate bloc backs the plan. The compromise includes the first federal work program for welfare recipients with work requirements delayed to 1994 and education options for young parents. Presidents Reagan and Dukakis urge passage, while critics call the plan false labeling and insufficient to restore self sufficiency.
In DeWitt Iowa residents plan a ecumenical dawn vigil for native son David Hilmers a Discovery astronaut with ties to Rev Mark Buck and First Congregational United Church of Christ. They will light porches fly flags and time the three hour vigil with the launch. Hilmers mother Matilda remains in worship at the church while George Nelsons Clinton parents also attend.
FBI says trail on Richard Church, 19, fugitive linked to the August Woodstock murders, is cold as a light blue 1981 Dodge pickup tied to his mother was found abandoned in Hollywood California. Church remains at large despite charges of murder and assault on his former girlfriend and her brother.
