The Dixon area United Way launched its drive with a goal of 245000, the region's highest target yet. A training session at Golden Corral energized 40 volunteers to approach local businesses for donations, supporting 22 agencies served by United Way locally.
The Dixon Area United Way announced a $245000 fundraising goal at a Thursday training session kicking off the campaign. Raynor Garage Doors donated $51400, about 21 percent of the total, and Ashby outlined plans to mobilize 40 volunteers and engage local businesses. A new Dixon High School Community Service Course aims to boost future volunteer participation.
President Bush announced an additional 50 million dollars in U S food aid to Poland to ease winter shortages and support market reforms. The package, drawn from surplus stocks, supplements 58.4 million dollars in existing aid and comes with EC commodities totaling 140 million dollars.
Springfield hosts a Kentucky education official who warns Illinois of a possible lawsuit over financing disparities. He cites Kentucky's recent Supreme Court ruling that ordered a revamped system to ensure equal opportunity, while Illinois officials urge collaboration to avoid court intervention and protect local control.
James Wible Sr., once of Mount Morris, was killed in a mass shooting at Standard Gravure in Louisville along with seven others, as 14 injured. A 47-year-old gunman, Joseph Westbecker, also died. Wible had 19 years at the Kentucky plant, previously worked at Kable Printing in Mount Morris, and remained linked to his hometown through family.
Jan Wagoner of the Dixon Education Association said the executive board met to discuss another negotiating session with the Dixon School Board before appointing a mediator. The pair spoke and agreed not to meet again until mediation proceedings start, with no time frame given for when that will begin.
Former President Ronald Reagan left St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester in a limousine heading to the airport. He wore a baseball cap and was seen by about 200 people. In the hospital he was visited by Boris Yeltsin and Elizabeth Dole and joined by Nancy Reagan for lunch with pediatric patients. Yeltsin praised Reagan for warming US Soviet relations and gave roses. Reagan, 78, underwent surgery Sept. 8 to remove brain fluid after a fall from a bucking horse on July 4.
