Dixon traffic delays from lane reduction on Galena Avenue

Traffic backs up in Dixon as Galena Avenue is reduced from four lanes to two at the Galena Avenue Bridge to Third Street for patching work. Motorists wait southbound while authorities plan truck turning lanes. Delays stretch from Second Street to the Galena Bridge and road work runs through October 27.

Bush visits death toll may go lower

President Bush flew to the Bay Area to assess quake damage amid reports the death toll from the Oakland Highway 880 collapse may be lower than feared. About 19 bodies were recovered and authorities warned the total toll could be under 100, with 52 vehicles located and 31 containing bodies.

Man killed by train in Rochelle identified

An unidentified man was struck by a Burlington Northern freight train in Rochelle. He suffered massive injuries and was pronounced dead at about 6:50 a.m. at Rochelle Community Hospital. The incident occurred 200 feet west of Washington Street in the downtown area, with authorities awaiting kin notification.

Early snow sets Chicago record
